Just got engaged – Now what? Some Tips to Help Your Wedding Planning.

A few years ago, I wrote this blog to help couples who have just got engaged & who are asking themselves “now what?”. Most of the advice I shared back then on wedding planning still holds true. But now, I have a personal update—I’m a bride-to-be myself! My partner, Gary, proposed to me at the end of November, and I now know firsthand what it feels like to be a fiancée. (And yes that is my engagement ring in the photo)

So, from one person who just got engaged to another—congratulations on your engagement! It’s such an exciting time, but it can also feel overwhelming as you start thinking about wedding planning. Don’t worry! I’ve put together some practical tips to help you get started on this amazing journey.

Tip 1: Enjoy the Moment. (but don’t forget to add your ring onto your home insurance)

First things first—take time to celebrate! Whether the proposal was a surprise or something you’d discussed beforehand, enjoy being on cloud nine. You’re engaged to the love of your life, so soak up every bit of joy and excitement from those around you.

This is the beginning of one of the most exciting adventures of your life. Wedding planning can get overwhelming at times, but for now, focus on the happiness of this moment.

But just make sure you add your beautiful new ring onto your home insurance. I’ve also purchased a travel ring the same as my engagement ring so I’m not worrying.

Tip 2: Don’t Rush Into Decisions On Planning Your Wedding

It’s tempting to dive straight into booking everything, but take your time. Wedding planning is a marathon, not a sprint! Start by doing research:

  • Browse Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Google for wedding vendors.
  • Ask married friends for recommendations—word of mouth is invaluable.
  • Think about your budget. Decide if you want to prioritize saving for your wedding or other goals, like buying a home.

Be mindful of your priorities. Many couples focus on securing a stunning venue but leave little budget for other suppliers, like photography. Your photos will be your lasting memories, so it’s worth investing in a photographer who captures your day beautifully.

Tip 3: Choose the Right Venue

Your wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. Ask questions like:

  • Does the venue host more than one wedding per day?
  • Do you want your wedding to be the sole focus at your chosen venue?

Personally, I love venues that cater to just one wedding a day—places like Ballygally Castle, Hillmount House, Tullyveery House, Altahammond Barn and Magheramorne Estate. These venues ensure you and your guests are the center of attention. I can’t wait to share what venue we booked for our wedding!

Also, consider your ceremony type:

Will it be a religious ceremony, a civil ceremony, or something more personal with a Celebrant? (Fun fact: I’m also a qualified celebrant who can legally marry you in Northern Ireland and Ireland!)

Tip 4: Research and Connect With Your Suppliers

Your wedding suppliers will play a huge role in your day, so take the time to find ones you trust and get along with. Here’s how to make the process easier:

  • Look for local suppliers to save time and reduce stress when attending appointments.
  • Choose professionals who align with your style and personality.

As a wedding photographer, I know how important it is to connect with my couples. Your photographer is with you for much of your day, so having a good relationship can make you feel more at ease.

Word of caution: Don’t choose suppliers based on price alone. Quality matters, and cutting corners can lead to regrets. If you need recommendations, check out my Recommended Wedding Supplier page for trusted professionals.

Tip 5: Plan for the Unexpected

Life happens, so don’t hesitate to ask your suppliers about insurance and contingency plans. For example, as a photographer, I take several precautions to protect your wedding memories:

  • I use two cameras with dual memory card slots for backups.
  • All images are stored securely in multiple locations, including a fireproof box and cloud storage.
  • I’m a member of the Professional Photographers Association NI (PPANI), so I can recommend backup photographers if needed.

These are just a few steps I take to ensure your day goes smoothly, no matter what.
