Celebrating 12 Yrs in Business as a Wedding & Family Photographer in Northern Ireland

Celebrating 12 Years of Photography

I can’t believe I am celebrating 12 incredible years in business! This journey has been filled with love, friendship, challenges, unforgettable memories, and a passion for storytelling. This is a reflection on the past, starting out from my kitchen table but also a look to the future. The journey I have been on as a wedding & family photographer In Northern Ireland has been full of highs and some lows.

Starting the Journey: Wedding Photography in Northern Ireland

Twelve years ago, I wont lie… I was in a dark place both in my personal & work life. Most of you will maybe already know the story of how photography found me but for those who don’t. I ended up becoming very ill physically & mentally, taking time off work to try & recover. During that time someone loaned me a camera.

Instantly I felt alive when I had a camera in my hand. I just put a pin in the map to see where I would travel that day to photograph mountains & flowers. Basically photographing anything I didn’t have to give direction to. I did eventually photograph some humans and knew that this was what I was meant to do with my life. Returning back to work 3 months later I instantly knew it was the wrong place for me. So on 12th Dec 2012 I resigned, walking out for the final time on 31st Dec.

A new year meant a new start for me. So on 2nd January 2013 Caroline Smyth Photography was established. I followed a dream and started my business as an outdoor family photographer. I also had 1 wedding booked In my 2013 diary. My goal was to continue improving my craft, to capture emotions and connections. This dream evolved into an opening my studio. My commitment was to preserve life’s most precious memories for couples, families, and individuals across Northern Ireland.

Expanding Services: Boudoir Photography and Celebrant Offerings

As my business grew, so did my vision. Beyond wedding photography, I ventured into empowering boudoir photography, helping clients celebrate their beauty, identity, and strength. Additionally, I became a celebrant, offering personalized ceremonies for weddings, baby naming, and adoption celebrations. These new services allowed me to connect with people on a deeper level and celebrate life’s milestones in meaningful ways. I have added to this training during 2024 & the start of 2025, so that I will be able to perform the legal part of a wedding day both in Northern Ireland & Ireland

Milestones and Memories Over 12 Years

Looking back, there are so many highlights that have shaped this journey:

  • Capturing “I Do’s” Across Northern Ireland: From coastlines, countryside venues or the hustle & bustle of city weddings, I’ve had the honour of documenting countless love stories.
  • Documenting Family Connections: I am truly privileged to have had so many families in front of my camera.
  • Empowering Clients with Boudoir Photography: Helping women reclaim their confidence and celebrate their unique beauty & strength has been a deeply rewarding experience.

Every client, every story, and every milestone has enriched my journey and fueled my passion for what I do.

Gratitude for 12 Wonderful Years

This 12-year journey would not have been possible without the incredible support of my two beautiful daughters who watched me grow my business from the ground up & are now running their own businesses. Also my clients, many of whom have become good friends. And over the past (almost) 6 years, my fiancé, Gary who encourages me every step of the way to continue growing my business. Your trust, kind words, and encouragement have been the foundation of my success. Each email, review, and recommendation has meant the world to me.

Looking Ahead: The Future of My Photography and Celebrant Business

As I look to the future, I am excited to continue evolving and embracing new opportunities. As a self-employed business woman I know that I always need to be looking ahead & diversifying. From exploring creative storytelling techniques & learning/ upgrading my skills, to expanding my client base across Northern Ireland & further afield. Exciting things are on the horizon for my small business.
